Initial Victory in the Campaign to Bring Victor Jara killer Barrientos to Justice!

VJaraAfter nearly 1 year of inaction by U.S. authorities, it appears that the pressure exerted by SOA Watch supporters like you has made this initial victory possible. Since our Justice for Victor Jara Campaign began in September, over 15,000 individual emails were sent to the Department of State, the Department of Justice, and other U.S. agencies in order to pressure them to act on Chile’s request to extradite Barrientos from the U.S. so that he may face trial in Chile.  Dec. 12, 2013. Initial Victory in the Campaign to Bring Chilean SOA Graduate Pedro Barrientos to Justice!

Chilean media has recently reported that the United States government is finally investigating Pedro Barrientos. In 2012, Chilean authorities issued an arrest warrant for Barrientos for the 1973 murder of Chilean folk musician Victor Jara, and requested Barrientos’ extradition from the U.S., where he has been living for years with impunity. The U.S. government did not heed the Chilean request and failed to take action against the School of the Americas graduate Barrientos.

After nearly 1 year of inaction by U.S. authorities, it appears that the pressure exerted by SOA Watch supporters like you has made this initial victory possible.

According to the reports, the U.S. Department of Justice is requesting that Chile send more evidence related to Barrientos’s family ties and military service. Barrientos will likely face prosecution in the U.S. on account of immigration fraud. This action taken by U.S. authorities is in line with our campaign’s call, but the primary demand remains: Barrientos must eventually be extradited to face Chilean justice. We thank all of those whom took the online action for making this initial victory possible, and will keep you updated on further developments in the case and the next steps in the campaign. Justice for Victor and all victims of the Chilean coup d’etat!

Justice for Victor Jara and all Victims of Chile’s Dictatorship

Pedro Barrientos is a former Lieutenant in the Chilean military as well as a graduate of the School of the Americas (SOA) who moved to the United States shortly after the end of Augusto Pinoche’ts dictatorship in 1990. Barrientos is allegedly one of the military officers responsible for the torture and murder of folk singer Victor Jara.

Barrientos has been accused as the man that fired the bullet that killed the Chilean icon. The Supreme Court of Chile has formally petitioned the U.S. government to extradite Barrientos to Chile. 8 months later, the U.S. government has still not responded to Chile’s legitimate extradition request.

In solidarity with the Chilean people, in commemoration of the 40th anniversary of their 9/11, we call on those committed to peace and accountability to support the “Justice for Victor Jara” campaign. Please take a moment to ask the appropriate U.S. authorities to support justice and comply with international law by extraditing or prosecuting Barrientos
